Mrs Clinton, I Presume?
I've been spending most of my time lately with this woman...
Reading her biography has really been interesting. I'm not done with it yet, I'm very excited to read about what made her run for New York Senator. But here's what's crazy: Today I had my EN-112 (American Civilization) exam, and guess what the first essay question is? "Write an essay in which you discuss briefly, first, women's traditional place in the USA and then their current situation in general terms. Include the following in your discussion: English common law, the frontier, the industrial revolution, female suffrage, the ERA, Roe vs Wade, Rosa Parks, Sandra Day O'Connor, Hillary Clinton". It was only on a whim that I picked up Hillary's memoirs, partly because I wanted to know mroe about her since she's been in the media quite a lot lately regarding whether or not she'll run for President in 2008, and partly, admittedly, because the book was ridiculously cheap (NOK 59, that's around $10, which is cheap for a book in Norway, trust me). Today I got my acceptance letter from the UK! This makes it all very real, and I'm just now struggling with trying to dechipher the vague and confusing language of the student loan application I have to fill out in order to finance this extravaganza. I can't believe I have to pay £5800 just to go school there for 40 weeks, and I pay NOK 750 (£63 or $125) for 9 months here in Norway. It really makes me appreciate the system we have here. The cost of accomodation is also ridiculously high. I have to pay NOK 12,000 more (£1000 or $2000) in the UK for the same room that I rent here. If I go for a room without my own bathroom, I still have to pay more than what I pay here (which is WITH my own bathroom). The prices are crazy, and what kills me is, these are student costs. It shouldn't cost money to get an education, the students should be rewarded for grasping their future by the balls and saying: "Hey! I don't want to slack off the rest of my life! I want to make a difference!" It just pisses me off, that's all. It makes me want to join Hillary and fight the system!
